### **Buch: Cannery Row**
* **Autor (Author):** John Steinbeck
* **Genre:** Roman (Novel), Fiktion
* **Erstveröffentlichung (First Published):** 1945
### **Beschreibung des Buches (Book Description)**
*Cannery Row* is not a novel with a traditional, linear plot. Instead, it is a collection of vivid, often humorous, and poignant vignettes that paint a portrait of a place and its people. The "hero" of the story is the street itself: Cannery Row in Monterey, California, during the Great Depression--a place of "sardines, and rust, and old iron, and lovers, and dreams."
The book revolves around the lives of the inhabitants of this poor but vibrant community. The central figures are:
* **Mack and the boys:** A group of lovable, unemployed men who live together in a converted fish-meal shack they call the "Palace Flophouse and Grill." They are resourceful, kind-hearted, and perpetually scheming for their next meal or gallon of wine, but their plans often go comically wrong.
* **Doc:** A wise and compassionate marine biologist who runs the Western Biological Laboratory. He is the intellectual and spiritual center of the community, respected and loved by everyone from the bums to the business owners. The character is based on Steinbeck's real-life friend, Ed Ricketts.
* **Lee Chong:** The shrewd but fair Chinese grocer who runs the local store. Nearly everyone on the Row is in debt to him, but he manages his business with a patient understanding.
* **Dora Flood:** The tough but generous madam of the Bear Flag Restaurant, a "respectable" brothel. She is a pillar of the community, enforcing strict rules of conduct and helping those in need during hard times.
The main thread connecting the vignettes is the effort by Mack and the boys to do something nice for Doc, whom they admire greatly. They decide to throw him a surprise party, but their well-intentioned plan backfires spectacularly, leading to the destruction of Doc's lab. Their second attempt to make it up to him forms the climax of the book.
**Themes:**
The novel explores themes of community, friendship, and the beauty found in unconventional lives. Steinbeck celebrates people living on the margins of society, finding dignity, joy, and a complex moral code in a world that would otherwise dismiss them. It is a story about finding family in unlikely places and the simple kindness that holds a community together.
