Okay, let's delve into *The National Press* by Cartwell Kent, a fascinating and often controversial work published in 1938. It's a crucial document in understanding the early days of the McCarthy era and the burgeoning anti-communist hysteria in the United States. Here's a breakdown of its key aspects:
**1. The Context: The Rise of McCarthyism**
* **The Red Scare:** The book is a direct response to the escalating anti-communist panic of the 1930s and 40s. The US government, fueled by fears of Soviet espionage and communist infiltration, launched a massive campaign to investigate and prosecute suspected radicals and enemies of the state.
* **The National Security Index:** The FBI created the National Security Index, a system of ratings for individuals deemed to be a threat to national security. This index was used to target individuals and organizations, often with little evidence.
* **Kent's Role:** Cartwell Kent, a former FBI agent and a prominent figure in the anti-communist movement, became a key advocate for the National Security Index and a leading voice in the growing paranoia. He believed it was a necessary tool to protect American society.
**2. *The National Press* - The Core of the Book**
* **The "National Press" - A Network of Informers:** Kent argues that the true source of the anti-communist hysteria wasn't a centralized government agency, but a vast, decentralized network of informants - ordinary Americans who were actively reporting on suspected communists and radicals. He calls this network the "National Press."
* **How it Works:** The book details how these informants were gathering information through various means:
* **"The Whispers":** They were listening to conversations, observing behavior, and collecting rumors.
* **"The Records":** They were meticulously documenting every interaction, every meeting, every suspicious activity.
* **"The Surveillance":** They were using a combination of physical surveillance (watching people's homes, cars, etc.) and psychological surveillance (reading letters, examining documents).
* **The Scale of the Network:** Kent paints a remarkably detailed picture of the scale of this network. He estimates that millions of Americans were involved, and the information was being disseminated through a complex system of channels.
* **The "Truth" is Subjective:** A crucial element of Kent's argument is that the "truth" was often subjective and based on incomplete or biased information. The informants were driven by fear and a desire to prove their own loyalty to the government.
**3. Key Arguments and Themes**
* **The Illusion of Security:** Kent argues that the fear of communism was largely a product of a society that was increasingly anxious and insecure. The government was using fear to justify intrusive surveillance and control.
* **The Erosion of Privacy:** The book highlights the alarming trend of government intrusion into private lives, fueled by the desire to identify and punish potential threats.
* **The Danger of "Confirmation Bias":** Kent emphasizes the importance of recognizing confirmation bias - the tendency to seek out information that confirms existing beliefs. The network of informants was a prime example of this.
* **The Role of the Media:** Kent criticizes the media for amplifying the fear and hysteria, contributing to the spread of misinformation.
**4. Controversies and Criticisms**
* **Historical Accuracy:** The book has been heavily criticized for its historical accuracy. Kent's estimates of the number of informants are highly debated, and some historians argue that his account is exaggerated.
* **The "Truth" as a Political Tool:** Critics argue that Kent's emphasis on the subjective nature of truth was a deliberate attempt to justify the government's actions and to deflect criticism.
* **The Lack of Evidence:** The book relies heavily on anecdotal evidence and circumstantial details, rather than concrete proof.
**5. Significance and Legacy**
* **A Turning Point:** *The National Press* is considered a seminal document in understanding the early days of the McCarthy era. It exposed the extent of the anti-communist paranoia and the methods used to suppress dissent.
* **Influenced Subsequent Investigations:** The book influenced subsequent investigations into the FBI's surveillance activities and contributed to a greater awareness of the dangers of unchecked government power.
* **A Cautionary Tale:** It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of protecting civil liberties and safeguarding privacy in the face of fear and suspicion.
